Exploring Program Celebrates 60 Years
The Learning for Life Career Exploring program is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year.  Exploring is a career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the 8th grade) through 20 years old.  Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences that help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities.  Local community organizations initiate a specific Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people.  The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.  Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities; life skills; citizenship; character education; and leadership experience.

Though Exploring is best known for its programs in Law Enforcement and Fire Service, Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career fields including aviation, law & government, medical, journalism and military, just to name a few.

2010 National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference
The 2010 National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference will host thousands of participants for the 17th biennial conference.  This event has been successful over the years due to Advisors’ active support and participation and the opportunity to network with adults and youth from all over the U.S.A.  The conference will be on July 19 to 24, 2010 at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.  The cost is $400 per person plus a one-time nonrefundable post registration fee of $100.

The program consists of several days of exciting competitions and events.  Team competitions will include: Arrest and Search; Bomb Threat Response; Crime Prevention; Crime Scene Search; Domestic Crisis Intervention; Shoot/Don’t Shoot; Hostage Negotiation; Burglary in Progress; Traffic Accident Investigation; Traffic Stop; White Collar Crime; and Emergency Field First Aid.

Individual events: Police Physical Performance Testing; Air Pistol Competition; Pistol Competition (9mm); Sample Written Evaluation; Drill Competition; BeamHit; Bike Policing; and Non-Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (NEVO).

Seminars: Bomb Investigations; Combating Terrorism in America; Executive Protection; Exploring Leadership Development; Fugitive Investigations; Gang Recognition and Identification; Hate Crime and Terrorism on the Internet; Narcotics Trafficking and Interdiction; Protecting Our National Borders; and Protect Yourself, Self-Defense, Psychological Profiling, Surveillance Methods and Technology.

This conference always sells out so register ASAP.  Look for the 2010 conference guidebook and reservation form in the summer of 2009 at:  www .learningforlife.org/exploring/lawenforcement

 Exploring Alumni Association Launched
This year is the 60th Anniversary of Exploring.  It’s fitting to celebrate this Anniversary by launching a nationwide search for former Explorers.  The search will result in the development of an Exploring Alumni Association (EAA).  Jersey Shore Council will be contacting all Explorer Posts and ask them to identify 10 or more former Explorers who were successful participants in their post and who arenow successful members of communities across the country.  Former Explorers are asked to go to the linked in website http://www.linkdin.com/evgh/192898/and join the EAA directory.

Law Enforcement Exploring Update
Law Enforcement Exploring has added a new all-inclusive listing on our National website. Please take a moment to visit www.learningforlife.org/exploring/lawenforcement and review the items under the “Law Enforcement Exploring Program Guidelines” heading.  This new area includes all major programs, policy statements, and Safety First Guidelines for Law Enforcement Exploring.  This all-inclusive listing should make it easier to find information and resources to conduct a quality and safe program for your Explorers.
